Technology Blog 1 - Developing a Connected Learning Model

In chapter 2, "Developing a Connected Learning Model" the premise of having a network of people to learn from and instruct was introduced. They use a teacher as an example, having them with the usual network that a teacher would have this network included colleagues, families, media, and their base curriculum documents. This is then expanded on with the ideal network that someone should strive for in their professional life, this network is much more complicated and offers more avenues to spread knowledge that you have and attain knowledge that others have in your field. This network has three levels those being, the local community, global network, and a bounded community. A local community being primarily face-to-face with the others being more online than not. These communities that you build can help advance your career by introducing you to new ideas and ways of thinking.

Some ways that I could take advantage of this is with coding, you can learn most of everything on your own but there are some things that are difficult to figure out. Such as an error that you may get in a program, someone else may have the solution that you cannot find or can help you figure out the issue you are having. With the knowledge that you gain from collaborating on projects you can then spread that knowledge to others. For example, if you were developing an app that you were having the same issue with that kept making the app crash as you made it. You cannot figure it out for the life of you and even some of your peers have no idea because it is a super niche issue. Someone that lives halfway across the country could have run into that exact same issue as you and know the fix, but you would never know them unless you connected with them. Sometimes people have the fixes to errors just posted online which is another way that people share their knowledge when it comes to coding but that is not always the case.

This kind of networking can lead to career opportunities as well, someone that works in a nearby city could like your work and what you have to say then offer you a job because of that. An example of this in my personal life is someone I met at a New Years Eve party, I did not take the job because I did not have the time and wanted something more long term and consistent but meeting me that day and talking about some computer nerd things led him to offering me a job/project for a commission. I had no idea who this was and what kind of person they were prior, we met through a mutual friend and have not stopped talking since then. That connection could be huge for me in the future, especially if he likes my work and how I get things done. Connections like this are vital to advancing careers.

  1. I have a few friends who have gone into coding as well, and they said from experience. Connected learning models are necessary. What was the job you were offered?
